Joseph Rowe Smith was born in Stillwater, New York on Sept. 8, 1802. He graduated from West Point, U.S. Military Academy in 1823 and served in the Florida war, 1837-1842; Mexican War, and returned in 1861 because of a debilitating wound to his left arm. In 1864 he was appointed Mustering and Disbursing Officer for Michigan, with headquarters on the Great Lakes.
